How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

The science behind laser hair removal is fascinating, and also important to understand. This is because the way in which laser hair removal works requires a commitment to a series of treatments. It only takes one treatment to begin seeing the results you want, but it takes a complete treatment regimen to enjoy those results for a prolonged period.

To eliminate unwanted hair, a specific form of laser energy is directed toward the skin, where it gets absorbed in the hair follicles. Specifically, the light targets the melanin in the hair that is growing in the follicle at the time of treatment. As the light gets absorbed, the hair dissolves. Additionally, the heat from this contact stunts the cells within the hair follicles that are involved in the active hair growth cycle.

The hair growth cycle is an important aspect of laser hair removal. It is the reason why multiple sessions are required to achieve lasting results. We schedule sessions several weeks apart in order to affect each active hair growth cycle. Your hair follicles go through various cycles. In one, the anagen phase, hair is growing. In another, the catagen phase, hair follicles are shrinking. Finally, in the telogen phase, your hair follicles are at rest and you're shedding old hairs. Once this occurs, the follicles become active again. Laser hair removal treatments are only effective during that active hair growth phase.

What Aftercare is Required following Laser Hair Removal?

You don't need to take time off work or most normal activities to recover from laser hair removal. However, there are a few aftercare instructions you'll want to follow to reduce unnecessary discomfort and irritation. You can expect your skin to be a little extra sensitive for at least a few days after your appointment. During that time, the general rule of thumb is to avoid excess sun, sweat, heat, and chemicals. Refrain from tanning, specifically. Use the gentlest skincare products available, and wash your face or shower with lukewarm water. Avoid hot tub use as well as chlorinated spas and pools. Also, postpone a heavy workout and choose products that do NOT contain alpha or beta hydroxy acids or retinoids. After four to five days, you should be able to resume all of your normal activities, with the exception of tanning.

What Areas Can Laser Hair Removal Treat?

This treatment is popular for adults of all ages for its longevity and versatility. Laser hair removal can be performed on nearly any part of the face and body. Common areas include:

  • Chin
  • Upper lip
  • Jawline
  • Shoulders
  • Back
  • Underarms
  • Arms and hands
  • Chest and abdomen
  • Bikini area
  • Buttocks
  • Legs
  • Feet

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

The absorption of light into melanated hair is the key factor in laser hair removal success. Historically, the process has worked best on dark hair and light skin. There may be some challenges in targeting hair that is blonde or very light red due to the minimal absorption of light. Grey hair has no melanin so tends to not respond to laser hair removal.

One of the biggest questions about laser hair removal is whether or not someone with darker skin can get good results. This used to be an issue, but, with advances in technology, it's become easier to treat a wider range of skin tones and hair colors. What may change from one circumstance to another is the number of treatment sessions it may take to achieve lasting results.

If you're curious about whether or not you're a good candidate for laser hair removal, schedule a consultation! Our experienced staff can help you understand the nature of this laser treatment, its potential risks for your situation, and the potential benefits. If we do not believe that laser hair removal could work for you, we will be transparent about it.

Are the Results Permanent?

Having laser hair removal can mean having smooth, hair-free skin for many months or even many years. That said, it's possible that some of the treated follicles will eventually become active again. Typically, when this happens, the hair that is grown is much lighter and thinner than it was previously. Touch-up treatments can efficiently disrupt the hair growth cycle once again, securing longer-lasting results.

Your Treatment

Before your treatment, you'll meet with a member of our staff to learn more about how it works and what to expect. You'll also receive specific instructions to follow after your treatment. We provide this consultation to ensure that we understand the results you are looking for. Prior to the treatment, you will need to:

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning
  • Discontinue any use of Retin-A at least 2 weeks beforehand
  • Halt any medications that cause sun sensitivity or increase bleeding

During the procedure, we use the laser device to target and destroy the hair follicles. The treatment requires only a few minutes for small areas, with up to an hour needed for larger areas of the body.

Most patients feel minimal or no discomfort during the procedure. If needed, we can apply a topical anesthetic. A thorough evaluation of the patient's skin type is necessary to determine which laser or light based hair removal works best. For darker skin types a 1064 Nd:YAG laser is least absorbed by pigment and avoids the risk of burning the patient. Lighter skin types are often better treated with short wave lengths or light based devices.

After the Treatment

Most people experience a mild, sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling, following their laser hair removal session. However, these symptoms typically last only for a few hours and you can resume your normal activities after your appointment.

Usually several treatment sessions are needed for maximum results. Although the follicles targeted during your treatment can no longer grow hair, follicles that were not in an active growth stage during prior treatments will still have the ability to grow hair. Dedication to the process is important for successful treatment; skipping treatments will often lead to unwanted hair growth making the outcome less successful.

We look forward to working with you to make your laser hair removal a complete success. Learn more about this treatment when you request a consultation or call us at 407-999-2585.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Acne, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, sun damage — these are just a few common skin concerns. At Hillcrest Plastic Surgery, our services go beyond invasive procedures. When you need a way to revitalize your skin, we have the perfect method for exemplary results.

Laser skin resurfacing is the all-around champion when it comes to skin concerns, and we offer ablative and non-ablative options so you can get the level of results you're looking for.

Our Process During Laser Skin Resurfacing

There are a few types of laser therapy, which can lead to confusion for many people. While non-ablative laser therapy primarily focuses on increasing collagen production, ablative laser therapy goes a step further by removing the outermost layers of skin and vaporizing excess tissue. Though ablative therapy takes longer to recover from, the effects are much more drastic, making it the preferred treatment for moderate to severe concerns such as:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Crow's feet
  • Smile lines
  • Acne scars
  • Skin laxity
  • Hyperpigmentation

From your initial consultation onward, our cosmetic specialists will help you create and implement a personalized treatment plan that addresses your precise goals. In just a few 30-minute treatments, you can look forward to impeccable skin rejuvenation and more confidence in yourself than ever before.

Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing in Orlando

Laser skin resurfacing is one of the best treatments for addressing a range of skin conditions, from old acne scars to developing signs of aging. At Hillcrest Plastic Surgery, we take skin rejuvenation seriously, which is why our services include non-ablative and ablative laser therapy options. Discover the right solution for your concerns, and let us create a personalized treatment plan for your best skin.

Our Process During Fractional Laser Treatment

Fractional laser skin resurfacing is the non-ablative form of laser therapy. While ablative lasers target the topmost layers of skin to lessen the appearance of imperfections, non-ablative lasers use heat energy to penetrate deeper into the skin. This allows the laser to reach the base layers of skin cells, where it can stimulate the production of collagen and elastin — two essential nutrients that keep your skin strong and elastic.

This rejuvenating treatment is minimally invasive and often has our patients in and out of our office within an hour. It is the ideal treatment for a range of mild to moderate skin conditions, including:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Acne scars
  • Hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone
  • Melasma
  • Stretch marks
  • Loose skin

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Treatments

If you’re searching for an easy, low-maintenance way to rejuvenate your skin, eliminate facial imperfections, and achieve an overall more youthful appearance to your complexion, then you’re in luck. At Hillcrest Plastic Surgery & Dermatology, we proudly offer patients IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Treatments to treat concerns ranging from acne to aging while customizing a treatment protocol that addresses each individual patient’s needs.

What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)?

IPL photo rejuvenation, also known as a photofacial, allows men and women to turn back the clock with non-surgical/no downtime body treatments by erasing skin imperfections such as wrinkles, age spots, and broken facial veins. Skin resurfacing in Orlando using our Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) system dramatically improves our patients’ skin tone and texture. And here’s a plus: there’s no downtime.

During IPL therapy, we use intense light pulses to treat concerns resulting from aging and the environment, including:

  • Sun damage
  • Wrinkles
  • Scars
  • Brown spots
  • Reddened, flushed skin caused by rosacea
  • Red or brown birthmarks

Your Treatment

Before your IPL treatment, our team will meet with you and discuss how to prepare. You’ll also receive specific instructions to follow after your treatment. We provide this consultation to ensure that you can enjoy the beautiful results you desire. Before the treatment, you will need to:

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning two weeks prior to treatment
  • Discontinue any use of Retin-A two weeks before your treatment
  • Halt any medications that cause sun sensitivity or increase bleeding

During your treatment, the IPL device delivers energy to your skin, targeting vascular and pigmented lesions and other blemishes in the skin. The procedure itself only takes 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. Our patients often combine their treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic or an injectable filler for more complete rejuvenation.

Who Is a Good Candidate for an IPL Facial?

A good candidate for an IPL facial is anyone who struggles with common skin care concerns, including wrinkles, sun damage, or depigmentation. Clients who seek IPL treatment may be experiencing the following issues with their complexion:

  • Sun damage
  • Dark age spots
  • Melasma
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Sagging skin
  • Acne scarring
  • Broken capillaries
  • Enlarged pores

Certain health conditions, including severe active acne or rosacea, may not be suitable for this procedure. People with darker or tanned skin tones and deep wrinkles may also experience different results from IPL than others. They should consult with Dr. Spence about alternative treatments that may benefit their skin tones and conditions more.

To find out whether you’re a good candidate for an IPL photo facial, you must have a consultation with a cosmetic medicine provider. We can examine your skin and evaluate your complexion concerns to determine whether IPL is the best treatment for you.

What Are the Advantages of IPL Over Other Skin Resurfacing Options?

IPL technology provides a variety of benefits that other skin resurfacing options do not. Unlike more extensive procedures like microneedling, an IPL photofacial is completely non-invasive. There are no needles, incisions, or sutures involved in the process. Punctures are not made to the skin in any way.

IPL can effectively reduce age-related changes, fade dark spots, and diminish scarring through intense pulsed light without ever having to break the skin’s surface.

Another benefit of an IPL facial is that there’s no recovery or downtime involved. After other resurfacing procedures, you may be required to perform certain aftercare or avoid specific activities for several weeks. The IPL recovery process is less extensive. The only recommendation after an IPL treatment is to avoid direct or prolonged sun exposure.

Clients also enjoy that an IPL treatment acts as a solution for a wide variety of cosmetic concerns. While providing resurfacing benefits, an IPL facial can also treat wrinkles and fine lines, sagging skin, and scarring. IPL technology is even used as a method of hair removal for some patients.

How Many Treatments Are Necessary for Best Results?

To see optimal results, you will need to have multiple IPL sessions. The exact number of treatments necessary for each patient can vary, but most patients have somewhere between three and five treatments, each spaced one month apart. Depending on your skin’s concerns, you may need more or fewer treatments.

During your initial consultation, we can provide insight as to how many treatments you will need to achieve your desired outcome.

How Often Do I Need IPL to Maintain My Results?

To maintain your results after the initial round of IPL treatments, you can return once or twice per year. Some patients have skincare concerns that need more thorough and ongoing treatment, in which case they may elect to return more often for additional IPL sessions.

Is IPL Skin Resurfacing Painful?

The IPL skin resurfacing process is not painful. Most clients report feeling a slight warmth being emitted from the device during their sessions. Once your session is complete, your skin may feel like you have a minor sunburn for several days.

In some instances, the skin can be irritated or experience flaking and dryness. Your doctor will provide aftercare instructions if this occurs

Are There Side Effects with the IPL Photofacial?

Like any other laser skin resurfacing treatment, the IPL photofacial can come with several risks. These can include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Blistering
  • Brown spots

These common side effects can disappear within a few hours to several days after your treatment.

After the Treatment

Following the treatment, most people experience a mild, sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling. However, these symptoms typically last only for a few hours after treatment, and you can resume your normal activities after your appointment. As your body’s natural healing occurs, you will enjoy a revitalized appearance, including smoother skin with enhanced facial color and tone.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Systems

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

Pulsed light systems and lasers are very similar and treat lesions in basically the same way. However, the RejuveLux process uses a new technology that removes lesions much faster than lasers. Treatments can fit even the busiest person's schedule.

Intense Pulsed Light is effective for the treatment of Rosacea and red flushed skin, age spots, freckles, red and brown birthmarks, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), sun damage and broken veins.

The medical spa treatments are quick and easy. After your initial preparation, your treatment provider will move the Palomar Pulsed Light hand piece over your skin. The hand piece emits a light that breaks up the pigment in the lesions. Most people perceive the light as a gentle "snapping" sensation, which causes little to no discomfort.

Pigmented lesions will darken slightly after treatment, and then fade away after about 10-14 days. Most people experience some mild temporary redness and swelling, similar to a sunburn, in the treated are shortly after treatment. This does not interfere with normal activities and usually subsides within a day. In some cases, the redness may last longer, but will still be mild and temporary. There are other less likely side effects that will be explained to you at your initial consultation.

Vessels (visible veins) generally undergo immediate graying or blanching and the surrounding area may redden. The vessels then fade after about 10-14 days.

Photofacial, or photorejuvination, with the Palomar MediLux Intensed Pulsed Light system will provide a noticeable improvement in tone and texture of most skin types with no down time.

We offer Intense Pulsed-Light (IPL) therapy for the following:

  • Facial Veins
  • Wrinkles (Photo-facial Skin Rejuvenation)
  • Poikiloderma of Civatte (redness of the chest)
  • Angioma (red, cherry-like birthmark)
  • Sun Damage
  • Brown Pigmentation (age spots & freckles)
  • Acne
  • Port Wine Stains
  • Rosacea (red blush to the face and/or nose)
  • Treatment of Scars (red and raised)
  • Permanent Hair Reduction

Down time is minimized, with many patients returning to their regular activities promptly. IPL Therapy can be used with all skin types and any area can be treated, except directly around the eyes. IPL Therapy is a part of our minimal down time rejuvenation protocol and may be preformed in conjunction with:

Hand Rejuvenation

You can use makeup on your face – and artfully arrange your hair so that it hides those forehead lines. Your hands, however, can be the "giveaway" when it comes to revealing your age. To turn back the clock and restore your smooth, firm skin, Dr. Spence provides hand rejuvenation in Orlando as part of our non-surgical/no downtime body treatments.

Take the first step on your journey to enhancing your hands beautifully and naturally. Request a consultation or, you can give us a call at 407-999-2585, and one of our knowledgeable staff members will be happy to help you.

Who is a Candidate for Hand Rejuvenation?

You may benefit from hand rejuvenation if:

  • You want to correct damage caused by the environment and aging such as sun spots and bulging veins.
  • You want to restore lost volume that results in that "sunken" look around the hand bones.
  • You want to tighten, tone, and smooth the skin on your hands.

To view the naturally beautiful results, view our Before and After Photos.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Dr. Spence conducts a detailed evaluation of the aesthetics involved in your procedure, including the skin on your hands, your bone structure, and a discussion of the results that you want to achieve. He uses that information to design a detailed treatment plan tailored to your areas of concern.

Our team will tailor a unique skin care regimen for you to follow before and after your procedure as well.

Hand Rejuvenation Procedure

Based on your specific concerns, your hand rejuvenation procedure may include injectable fillers, fat grafting, and laser rejuvenation.

Injectable Fillers

Injectable fillers such as RADIESSE® can add volume to bony hands, reduce the prominence of protruding veins and tendons, and help with wrinkled skin. The treatment usually takes less than 20 minutes, with no anesthesia needed. After injecting RADIESSE into your hands, it is gently massaged into the areas that could benefit from added volume.

Laser and Light Treatments

Sun damage can cause discolored skin, which can be effectively treated with laser and light therapy. Depending on your specific areas of concern, we may recommend photorejuvenation, ablative laser skin resurfacing, or fractional laser skin resurfacing. These treatments can transform rough, dull skin into smooth, healthy skin that makes your hands look years younger!

Fat Grafting

Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, can achieve two goals: a slimmer, smoother silhouette and more youthful hands. Dr. Spence first harvests the fat through liposuction from areas with excess fat deposits, such as the stomach or thighs, to contour your body for a firmer, sculpted look. He then processes the harvested fat before using it to enhance your hands.

We evaluate your hands carefully to develop the ideal treatment plan for creating beautifully rejuvenated hands. For example, he may use fat grafting to add volume to sunken, bony hands. Fat grafting can be performed on an outpatient basis, often requiring only local anesthesia. Two to three sessions may be needed to achieve the results desired. Because fat grafts utilize your own tissue, this option avoids the potential risk involved in other implant methods.

Recovery & Results

Depending on the treatments used, downtime varies. For example, no downtime is needed after RADIESSE: patients return to their regular routines immediately. Laser treatments may result in slightly pink skin, which soon subsides. We will provide you with guidelines for easing your recovery and healing quickly and fully.

After treatment, our patients typically experience significant improvement, with smoother, more youthful looking hands. The signs of aging are diminished, from reduced wrinkles and spots to less prominent veins and tendons.

Your Chemical Peel Options

We offer a variety of chemical peels to provide for different needs. Superficial peels offer excellent benefits with minimal downtime. For those needing more significant improvements, our medium depth peels can achieve more dramatic changes, but they also require more recovery time due to the deeper exfoliation.

  • Superficial Peels: To achieve maximum effectiveness from these mild peels, we typically perform alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) peels in a series for maximum effectiveness. We offer AHA peels in different concentrations, depending on your skin care needs.
  • Medium Depth Peels: Formulated to correct more intense damage, our medium peels include the more concentrated salicylic acid peels, Jessner peels, and the Obagi® Blue Peel. Because these peels are stronger, we will advise you on appropriate skin products to use prior to your treatment. By following the recommended home skin regimen, you can minimize downtime and enhance your outcome.

Microneedling Treatment in Orlando

With a microneedling treatment at Hillcrest Plastic Surgery, you can feel more confident in your skin. Our team of cosmetic specialists provides quality microneedling services to help you achieve smooth, healthier skin.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling — also known as collagen induction therapy — is a cosmetic procedure that uses tiny needles to create punctures in the skin. As a result, this treatment stimulates collagen and elastin production for skin rejuvenation, improving skin texture, reducing scars and minimizing pore size. Microneedling is primarily done on the face.

This popular procedure comes in several forms, both traditional and radiofrequency (RF) microneedling. While both these techniques use needles to create micro-injuries, RF microneedling also delivers radiofrequency energy to heat deeper layers of skin and enhance collagen stimulation for longer-lasting results.

Our Process During Microneedling Treatments

Before a microneedling treatment, you will meet with one of our cosmetic specialists for a consultation. They will examine your skin and discuss your goals for the procedure, walking you through what to expect. This consultation also gives you time to ask questions and discuss your concerns. Our providers will also tailor a treatment plan and let you know how many sessions you'll need.

During the microneedling procedure, your cosmetic specialist will apply numbing lidocaine gel to the treatment area to enhance your comfort. Microneedling uses an electric tool to slowly and gently move the needles around. You may feel a slight warmth or scratching sensation as the needle pulses up and down. Depending on the treatment size, the whole procedure can take as little as 15 minutes.

Recovery and Results After Microneedling

Microneedling is an outpatient treatment, so you can return to your regular schedule and activities as soon as it's done. Your face may be slightly red and feel swollen for up to five days. An ice pack can help reduce some irritation and discomfort.

As your skin heals, it will produce more collagen and elastin to make it look smoother and firmer. Within a week, you should notice a healthy glow, and fine lines, scars or uneven textures will be reduced over several weeks.

What Our Clients Have to Say

Dear Dr. Spence and Team at Hillcrest, I just wanted to say “Thank you” for everything. I look better, feel better and it is all due to you and your wonderful team. Thank you again!

Dear Dr. Spence, You are truly a miracle worker. Thank you for your genuine caring and gifted hands.

Everyone from the front reception to the doctor were always courteous, patient, and available. I would definitely recommend this practice to my family and friends.

Thank you for your professional dermatology work on my skin that helped to create the elegant bride. The groom and the guests were in AWE and said I looked like an angelic princess.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

If you want to improve the look and feel of your skin without surgery, microneedling could be for you. This treatment works for adults of many ages and skin types, especially those with concerns, such as fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, acne scars or uneven skin textures. As long as your skin is free from severe conditions like eczema or psoriasis, you can be a candidate for microneedling.

Microdermabrasion

We love our sunny days in Florida – but all that exposure to the sun's warm rays can damage your skin. Coupled with the inevitable effects of aging, your skin can suffer from pigmentation changes, sun spots and enlarged pores. To restore your evenly toned and textured skin, we perform skin resurfacing through microdermabrasion in Orlando.

For some patients, microdermabrasion achieves the optimal facial rejuvenation when combined with other treatments, such as fat transfer. Our unique skin care protocol provides our patients with the details that they need – from pre-treatment preparation to post-treatment home skin care – to achieve exquisite results.

Take the first step on your journey to renewing your skin's radiance. Request a consultation today. Or, call us at 407-999-2585, and one of our knowledgeable staff members will be happy to assist you.

Who is a Good Candidate?

You may benefit from microdermabrasion if you want to:

  • Diminish age spots and sun damage
  • Treat blemishes, oily skin, and other acne issues
  • Minimize enlarged pores
  • Correct uneven pigmentation and scarring

To view the naturally beautiful results that we achieve at Hillcrest Plastic Surgery, view our Before and After Photos.

Your Microdermabrasion Procedure

Our exfoliation techniques are appropriate for all skin colors and types, and may also be used on areas such as the hands, back and chest. Our skin care specialists will also help you to prepare for skin resurfacing through the use of the appropriate skin care products.

To perform your microdermabrasion, the aesthetician exfoliates the outer layers of skin with a special device that propels a stream of fine crystals onto the skin to vacuum off dirt, skin cells, and excess crystals. The device, DiamondTome™, uses an innovative wand with natural diamond chips to polish the skin and remove dead skin cells. The exfoliated skin cells are then gently vacuumed away.

Recovery

Effective and safe even around areas such as the eyes and mouth, microdermabrasion using the DiamondTome system requires no downtime. Your skin may appear somewhat flushed after your treatment. However, the pink hue usually subsides in less than half an hour.

Results and Benefits

Microdermabrasion achieves more smoothly textured, softer skin. In addition to providing immediate benefits, microdermabrasion stimulates the growth of healthy new skin. The result: revitalized, younger-looking skin!

Benefits of Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning offers a wide variety of benefits, which include:

  • Exfoliation: Regular dermaplaning offers a deeper level of exfoliation when compared to at-home treatments. Removing the dead skin cells allows for better penetration of skincare products, which improves your complexion overall.
  • Smoother Skin: Dermaplaning makes your skin look and feel smoother. By removing built-up dirt, dead skin, and other impurities, your skin is clearer and less prone to acne flares.

Considerations and Risks

Even though Dermaplaning is a safe and effective treatment, there are still a few things to consider. Dermaplaning should only be performed by a licensed dermatologist or esthetician. They are skilled professionals who understand how deep they should go with the Dermplaning scalpel. In turn, this reduces the risk of injury or infection.

Dermaplaning might not be suitable for everyone. While it is a safe procedure, some patients may have skin conditions that may be worsened with treatment. Patients with ongoing acne flares or rosacea should wait under their skin is clear.

After dermaplaning treatment, your skin may be more sensitive to both products and sun exposure. Always apply sunscreen if you’re going to be outdoors, and hold off on any harsh skincare serums, like retinol, for a few days after treatment.

It’s also important to note that dermaplaning requires regular maintenance. Typically, you need repeat sessions at regular intervals.

Sclerotherapy

When warm weather tempts us to enjoy the great outdoors, we look forward to wearing shorts, skirts, and other sportswear suited to sunny seasons. If spider veins and unattractive purple and blue vein imperfections are causing you to wear your winter wardrobe even on the hottest summer days, it's time to consider the benefits of sclerotherapy in Orlando.

At the Hillcrest Plastic Surgery, we use this non-surgical/no downtime body treatment to:

  • Minimize purple and blue vein blemishes
  • Make unsightly veins virtually invisible

Call Us To Schedule An Appointment

Your Sclerotherapy Consultation

Before your sclerotherapy treatment, you will be scheduled for an in-depth consultation. We will discuss how to prepare for your procedure and provide you with specific instructions to follow after your treatment. Prior to the treatment, you will need to discontinue any use of certain medications and supplements, such as aspirin, Vitamin E, flaxseed oil, Omega 3-6-9, Motrin, and Advil. You may not be a good candidate for treatment if you are taking Coumadin.

During your consultation, we will use a Doppler to screen your veins. This screening method is recommended to determine the best treatment.

Your Treatment

To minimize discomfort, a topical anesthetic is applied before each targeted vein is injected with a chemical solution, Sotradecol, which is an FDA-approved sclerosing agent. This chemical solution causes the unsightly veins to collapse and become almost invisible.

Most patients experience only a slight stinging sensation, which lasts for just a few seconds after the injection. Depending on the area treated and the condition of your veins, the entire procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

After the Treatment

You will need to wear compression stockings for several days. Although you may experience some bruising in the area treated and small, red areas at the injection sites, these concerns usually vanish within days after your treatment. You may have small red areas at the injection sites which usually resolve within days after treatment. You also may experience some bruising in the treatment area.

Depending on your situation, we may recommend 3 to 6 sessions to achieve optimal results. Full results should be visible approximately 6 to 8 weeks after your final sclerotherapy session.

Is There Downtime After Spider Vein Treatment?

Sclerotherapy typically requires little to no downtime, with most patients returning to normal activities the same day. However, you should follow a few tips for the best possible results. Avoid heavy lifting, squatting, or running for the first week after your appointment since intense physical activity can cause more inflammation.

It’s also a good idea to skip saunas and hot baths or showers for the first week since high temperatures could cause the veins to expand and compromise your results. Avoiding prolonged sun exposure immediately after your appointment and long term is essential since UV damage can trigger the development of new veins.

Additionally, you should try not to sit or stand in one place for longer than an hour or two in the week after treatment. If you have a job requiring prolonged standing or sitting, you might consider regularly wearing compression garments to work.

Are There Side Effects of Sclerotherapy?

The most common side effects of sclerotherapy, like itching, bruising, swelling, redness, and discomfort around the treatment site, are mild and resolve in a few days. Serious side effects are rare but can include an allergic reaction to the sclerosing aging, an ulceration around the injection site, blood clots in the treated veins, or skin infections.

Choosing a skilled provider with plenty of experience can minimize your risk of side effects. Visiting a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Kenrick Spence ensures you’ll receive the highest standard of care.

Will My Spider Veins Go Away Permanently After Sclerotherapy?

Removing spider veins with sclerotherapy typically takes several sessions. While the veins that we eliminate during your treatment won’t come back, new spider veins can still develop. Risk factors for developing telangiectasias include:

  • Genetics: If other family members have spider veins, you’re more likely to develop them.
  • Obesity: Healthy weight loss can help you reduce your risk of getting new spider veins since being overweight or obese puts added pressure on your veins.
  • Being female: Women are more likely than men to develop spider veins. Hormonal changes during pregnancy, menstrual periods, and menopause could be a contributing factor since female hormones tend to relax vein walls. Additionally, birth control pills and other forms of hormonal birth control could increase your risk.
  • Sitting or standing in place: Movement supports healthy blood flow, so you’re more likely to develop spider veins if you sit or stand in one place for long periods. Desk jobs can contribute, as can a profession like teaching, nursing, or cashier jobs.
  • Sun exposure: Prolonged UV exposure can increase your risk of spider veins and make existing veins look more prominent as they enlarge in the heat.

Is Sclerotherapy Safe?

When performed by a qualified provider, sclerotherapy is a safe and effective cosmetic treatment. The risk of serious side effects is low if you’re a good candidate for spider vein removal.

However, if you have the following conditions, our providers may recommend a different treatment:

  • You take prescription blood thinners.
  • You have clotting or bleeding disorders.
  • You’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or gave birth in the last three months.
  • You have existing unmanaged medical conditions.

Before your sclerotherapy treatment, our doctors will conduct a thorough intake to ensure your risk of complications is low. It’s essential to disclose any medical conditions (especially vascular disorders), over-the-counter supplements, and prescriptions, as they could interfere with spider vein treatment. Light therapy is a possible alternative to fade telangiectasias if you don’t qualify for sclerotherapy.

2. What is the difference between surgical and nonsurgical body treatments?

The difference between surgical and nonsurgical body treatments is how invasive the procedure is and what's involved in recovery. Surgical body treatments require incisions, anesthesia and significant downtime. Nonsurgical treatments use advanced technology, like cooling, heat and focused energy, to reshape and tighten the body without cuts or extended recovery periods. You'll usually be in and out of the office quickly and can get back to your daily routine with little to no downtime.

How much body treatments cost in Orlando varies, depending on the specific service, the areas you want to target and how many treatment sessions you'll need. During your consultation, we'll give you a detailed estimate based on your unique goals, treatment plan and any package pricing or promotions that may be available. We also offer financing and payment options to make it easier to invest in the results you want.

4. Are nonsurgical body treatments safe?

Nonsurgical body treatments are generally safe for most healthy adults. The FDA has approved several nonsurgical body treatments, including low-level laser therapy and ultrasound therapy. There are also several FDA-regulated aesthetic devices for achieving desired treatment results, which you can ask your provider about before your session.

At Hillcrest, all of our treatments are performed by providers who closely follow safety protocols. You might notice some mild side effects, like redness, swelling or temporary numbness, but these usually fade quickly. During your visit, we'll review your medical history and make sure you're a good candidate before scheduling any procedure, so you can feel confident every step of the way.

What's the Difference Between Ablative and Non-Ablative Laser Treatments?

An ablative laser focuses energy on the topmost layers of skin to vaporize old and loose tissue. A non-ablative laser or fractional laser uses heat technology to penetrate to the deepest layers of skin, stimulating collagen production.

How Many Laser Treatments Will I Need to See Results?

Most people see results after their first treatment, but follow-up procedures may be necessary for more severe skin conditions.

Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Painful?

While the laser can cause some mild discomfort during the procedure, we offer topical anesthetics and intravenous sedation for those who desire a more comfortable experience.

How Long Is the Recovery After Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Most people can return to normal activity within a day of treatment, though they may experience some mild swelling, itching or burning, similar to how a sunburn would feel.

Can Laser Treatments Be Combined With Other Procedures?

How Many Fractional Laser Treatments Will I Need?

While you'll notice results within the first treatment, many people choose to undergo additional treatments to increase the benefits they offer.

Is Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Painful?

There is some mild discomfort associated with the procedure, but Hillcrest offers a topical anesthetic to keep pain as minimal as possible.

Can Fractional Skin Resurfacing Be Combined With Other Treatments?

Yes. Talk to your provider about which other treatments will work best with your skin type. We regularly combine this procedure with BOTOX® and IPL therapy.

Am I a Good Candidate for Fractional Laser Resurfacing?

Fractional laser therapy is suitable for nearly every skin type. If you want to improve skin tone and texture, minimize signs of aging and otherwise address skin imperfections, this is the all-around treatment for you. In the weeks prior to the treatment, patients are asked to:

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning.
  • Avoid using products with Retin-A (retinol).
  • Stop using medications that can cause excessive bleeding and sun sensitivity.

Chemical Peels

Is putting acid on your face dangerous?

No, chemical peels performed by our highly qualified and experienced staff are not dangerous. Chemicals peels are one of the oldest and most reliable ways of rejuvenating the skin. At Hillcrest Plastic Surgery, these facial surfacing treatments are one of the most popular procedures performed. Depending on the type of peel, a chemical peel can:

  • Enhance dull or rough skin
  • Treat acne
  • Improve skin tone and texture

I have dark skin. Can I get a chemical peel?

Yes, you can receive a chemical peel at our medical spa in Orlando. Many practitioners shy away from treating ethnic skin with chemical peels. However, great results can be obtained using chemical peels for darker skin types. To achieve these benefits, the skin has to be adequately prepared by using lightening creams and retinols. By performing this preparatory stage, chemical peels can be used to even out the skin tone and blend the complexion.

I have bad acne. Which chemical peel is best for me?

This depends on your skin type and the nature and severity of your acne. Because we offer 7 different kinds of chemical peels at the Hillcrest Plastic Surgery, we are able to customize your chemical peeling agents to your particular skin type and acne concerns.

How do I best prepare for a chemical peel?

We recommend the following measures:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure the week prior to your chemical peel.
  • Avoid abrading or aggressively scrubbing your skin within a few days of your chemical peel
  • If you have undergone a waxing or other skin treatment before your peel, please inform your skin care specialist.

How many chemical peels does it take to even out my complexion?

This depends on skin type and depth of pigment. By creating a personalized skin care regimen for each patient, we are able to perform a series of peels to achieve great results while limiting downtime. For example, for more superficial peels such as glycolic acid, a series of three treatments may be required, while one or two treatments may suffice for medium-depth peels.

Who is a Candidate for Chemical Peels?

You may benefit from Orlando chemical peels if you want to:

  • Diminish facial wrinkles and lines
  • Reduce pore size
  • Correct sun spots, uneven pigmentation and areas of roughness
  • Minimize the visibility of acne scars and other superficial scars
  • Improve active acne

What is the recovery process for Chemical Peels?

The recovery process varies, depending on the peel used:

  • After a superficial chemical peel, your skin may appear slightly pink or flaky for a few days.
  • After a medium depth peel, you may experience crusting, peeling, redness, and tightness.

After their peels, Dr. Spence's patients typically experience significantly improved skin texture, with minimized lines and wrinkles and a more even skin tone. Patients with active acne benefit from the decreased oil production and bacteria count, while those with acne scars have smoother skin.
